WiMAX trial delivers ubiquitous wireless broadband for Dublin City University
Dublin City University students and staff are getting the chance to trial extremely high-speed 6 Mbps wireless broadband services over WiMAX, following an infrastructure rollout by AirSpeed Telecom on the campus. The DCU Network Manager James Healey said the 60-person trial group have responded very favourably to the trial, which makes it easier to access wireless broadband in outdoor areas, compared to WiFi, and allows connectivity in areas immediately surrounding the campus.

The trial is part of the Wireless Broadband strategy of HEAnet, Ireland's National Research and Education Network, which is seeking to provide ubiquitous wireless broadband to its users. Ubiquitous wireless access supports greater use of laptops and other Web-enabled mobile devices by students, as well as increasing usage of learning portals and other network-based resources.
The communications regulator provided a licence for the duration of the trial, which also incorporates HEAnet WiMAX USB modems and BreezeMax 4motion, a mobile WiMax solution from Alvarion. AirSpeed Telecom provided equipment installation and commissioning support for the trial, which is ongoing.
