The ticking clock of IPv4 has just about run down: address exhaustion is expected by late 2011 (or even earlier). Recently I've been tracking industry preparations for IPv6, with its prospect of nearly limitless addressing.
Evaluation of Juniper Networks IPv6 Migration (PDF) This independent study is a must-read for Juniper-based networks, examining how well the Juniper OS transitions an existing IPv4 infrastructure to IPv6, using IP/MPLS transport. See too Juniper's hefty slidedeck, comparing IPv4 and IPv6. IPv6 – Wikipedia The entry continues to be updated, and the section on IPv6 readiness and barriers to adoption makes interesting reading. A useful background of the protocol and its abilities. IPv6 Task Force Ireland A good snapshot of what Ireland is doing to prep for the transition, including, importantly, a list of named individuals with interest or expertise in the issue.
